Each pottery piece is unique and handmade by Kara in Newport, Oregon.
Functional pottery pieces are food safe. Most are dishwasher* and microwave** safe but with a few recommendations below. Freezing is not recommended. Bringing the pottery piece to room temperature prior to hot liquids.
*Pieces that have decals (underglaze transfers or overglaze transfers: color or gold) should be hand washed.
**DO NOT MICROWAVE IF YOUR POTTERY HAS GOLD ON IT. The gold is 22kt. It will cause sparks in the microwave.
- DO NOT MICROWAVE IF YOUR POTTERY HAS GOLD ON IT & HANDWASHING IS RECOMMENDED.
- MICROWAVE: When using the microwave, doing small increments of 30 seconds is recommended. Lightly touch the handle or body of the pottery piece before grabbing it out of the microwave to verify the temperature (sometimes the handle or body can get hot). As mentioned above, if your pottery has gold on it, stay away from the microwave.
- DISHWASHER: Even though pottery pieces are dishwasher safe, it is best to hand wash. Dishwasher detergents can have harsh and abrasive effects over time, which can dull the finish of the glaze. If your mug has an underglaze/overglaze decal/transfer (Examples: Gold Moon, an Orca, Whale, Bigfoot, Jellyfish, etc….) it’s best to hand wash.
- OVEN: When using the oven, it’s important to bring the pottery up to heat with the oven. Placing a cold pottery piece directly in a hot oven can cause the piece to crack or break. Pottery is a lot like glass, going from extreme heat to extreme cold (or reverse) will likely cause it to crack or craze (tiny crack system within the glaze).
